For the Uroborus show I created two ‘ancient texts’ to accompany the paintings and to be displayed with them. These books purpose is to draw the world of these characters out from the canvas and into the here and now by giving the observer a tangible piece of this other time and place. A tangible ‘artifact’ if you will, to further create the illusion of substance and make believable these character’s culture and belief structure.
The first of these books is the Dogma Text. Patterned much like a mediaeval bible text, this book is holy writ and is to be considered inerrant, no matter how many contradictions it may have or how ridden with errors it may be. For the purposes of context this particular book opens only to two pages which contain a relevant passage, and is perhaps the most error free passage in this fictional holy book.
The second book is the Prophet Text. This twelve page text is purposely more enigmatic. It is meant to be deciphered by the reader, like a Nostradamus quatrain. Much more fun and a bit more informative than the Dogma Text, the Prophet Text allows the reader/observer to bring to Uroborus their own experiences and concepts while exploring this ‘new’ world unfolding before them, thus creating a stronger link between the world of Uroborus and our own.
